Methylparaben is a controversial agent.  Globally, it is considered safe for use in food and personal care products by government agencies. Results from studies in the past decade are showing that parabens are endocrine disrupters, meaning when absorbed into the body it mimics or blocks hormones and disrupts normal body functions.

While parabens haven’t been directly linked to cancer, suspicions are growing.  Traces of parabens have been found in breast cancer tumors. The American Cancer Society states that larger studies must be conducted to find out the effects of parabens on breast cancer.

Methylparaben is widely used.  You can find it in lotions, moisturizers, shampoo, conditioners, bar soap, etc.

Methylparabens are found in nature.  Natural parabens are not used in commercial products.  Parabens in cosmetics come from petroleum.
