Your Cool Down In A Bottle

My nutrition guru friend, Chelsea Jo Conard, surprised me with an exciting essential oil blend that basically has been my A/C during the heat waves this summer.  No joke.  Just dab a couple drops of Aura Cacia’s Gray Matter Batter on the back of your neck and it is like the ice cube you were wishing for.  My friends and I were blown away by the cool down.

So I had to ask Chelsea to explain the magic behind this little wonder bottle for all of us on GH.

Here’s what she has to say:

Gray Matter Batter is a delightful blend of essential oils made by Aura Cacia.  It consists of peppermint oil, spearmint oil, lavender oil, and roman chamomile oil.  A little goes a long way when it comes to essential oils, especially for this intense mixture.  For cooling down, put a little on your finger and dab onto the back of your neck and on your temples.  Within a few seconds, the cooling sensation will penetrate your skin and you’ll be instantly transported to the Antarctic… minus the polar bears.

How does it work?  The mint oils actually trigger the “cooling sensors” in your body.  Kind of like when you chew a piece of mint gum and then try to drink some cold water.  It seems extra cold to your nerves, like you’ve been sucking on an ice cube.  Similarly, mint can actually affect the nerve cells on your skin changing the electrical activity, and the nerves send a signal to the brain, “This is cold!”  Mint doesn’t actually lower the temperature on your skin, but it sure does a good job of tricking you into thinking you might need to put on a pashmina.

The chamomile and lavender oils mellow out the minty scent.  They have a more calming effect, and help relieve tension in the body.  They also add an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-fungal element which is especially helpful in the warm weather.  Together with the mint oils, the chamomile and lavender can create a relaxed but alert sensation.

Other uses for Grey Matter Batter include massaging onto sore muscles and joints, and rubbing onto temples and neck to relieve headaches.  It can help with mild skin conditions, and insect bite relief.  In the colder months, Grey Matter Batter would make a great chest/ neck/ back rub before bed to clear the sinuses, relax the body, and help with any respiratory issues.

So, enjoy the summer even if you don’t have a working A/C.  Save electricity.  Gray Matter Batter is better!
