Clean Cleanse Day 3 + 4: April 23rd, 2014

One of the fundamentals of the Clean Cleanse is to get moving, go for walks, do light workouts, sweat, etc.  I look forward to the day that I’m able to do all that normal stuff.  I sprained my tendon at the beginning of February going mad crazy with a daily row, a daily mile run with the dogs, a somewhat daily session of BUTI Yoga, along with riding my bike to and from row class.  The ambition and drive were high as I wanted to get ready for our Hawaii trip in March.  Apparently that drive was too high for my left foot!

So that picture above is what my “workouts” at home now look like…shame on you if you thought something else was going on!

Goddess Huntress | Exercise Elastics

I have to stay off of my foot as much as possible for it to heal, which can leave a gal stir crazy (plus boyfriend and dogs, mind you!).  I have to get creative to keep moving while stationary. I workout with elastic bands while laying on the floor to bring the tone back into my legs, along with sit-ups, and boring weight training.  I incorporate 5 min floor work sessions throughout the day. A couple times a week I’m with my trainer and we do floor work and seated weight training as well. I go on mini-walks, 1/4 – 1/2 mile three times a week to stop and smell the roses.

The good news is that my physical therapist who I see once a week says I’m healing quite quickly, more quickly than expected.  The sweat is on the horizon. In the meantime, I will book an infrared sweat session, to retrain my pores how to sweat!  Plus, it will be molto excelente to show those toxins the door.

Since the Clean Cleanse is an anti-inflammatory diet, I’m sure it will do home healing magic on my tendon, which I welcome with open arms!

Day 3 + 4 Overall: Lots of thirst as I’ve experienced on days 1 and 2. Drinking lots of water. Lots of bathroom breaks. On the evening of day 3, I was a little snippy which I blame on my small piece of salmon I had with lunch.  Day 4 I made sure to have lots a generous portion of turkey at lunch (of course with veg galore: artichoke, asparagus, and arugula + quinoa) and I see my humor is much better!  My skin feels hydrated and soft. My nose is dewy oily in the mornings and my teeth feel really clean throughout the day…how’s that for some weirdo outcomes! Oh, and today I felt even more weird and uninterested calling Peter Luger’s Steakhouse for a reservation in June for our NYC trip…this cleanse is doing wonders to make me not want to touch a Peter Luger steak!

DVF Retrospective: Journey Of A Dress

Goddess Huntress | Journey Of A Dress Diane Von Furstenberg

Easter weekend, Andrew and I ventured to LACMA to view the Diane Von Furstenberg retrospective Journey Of A Dress, a celebration of 40 years of her infamous wrap dress.

Here are a few shots of her classic bold prints and work from the exhibit. My favorite is the first one above!

Do any of you own one of her infamous wrap dresses? Or used to? Such a simple design that is flattering on so many body types. Pretty impressive to build a successful brand on that simple concept by constantly refreshing the prints and slightly tweaking the silhouettes.

Journey of A Dress is on view at LACMA until May 1st.

Clean Cleanse Day 2: April 22nd, 2014

I had such a restful sleep last night. It was sooooo0 delicious, I believe I stayed in one position the whole night!

Upon waking, I threw on some clothes and headed to Trader Joe’s to load up on frozen berries and pineapple, leafy greens, turkey, and salmon. Back home I made my breakfast shake with pineapple, mixed berries, green apple, scoop of Green Vibrance superfood green powder, and the Clean Cleanse vanilla shake packet. I decided to do the same for the evening shake, but kick it up a notch with ginger. Watch out world, there is a cleansing renegade on the loose.

Goddess Huntress | Mixed Berry Clean Cleanse Shake Worked a bit on the computer with my shake, then rested my eyes from the screen with a small walk in the beach breeze, camera in tow…of, course.  I shot a few flower photos along the way…of, course.

For lunch, I pulled out my cilantro oil I made a couple of days ago. Which is basically a version of pesto minus the pine nuts and dairy.  I laid a couple turkey breast cutlets in a baking dish and spooned the cilantro oil over the top, then put them in the oven to bake.  As my cilantro turkey was cooking, I made brown rice, steamed some brussel sprouts with lemon, and roasted asparagus with lemon and salt. I spooned some cilantro oil over my rice and mixed it together…because it is that good.

My kitchen assistants (a.k.a. my dogs) were eagerly awaiting to join in on the cleanse, so I fed them the tough asparagus trimmings. Every vegetable is always a hit with these two, my boyfriend says I turned them into hippies! Oh, and they love green juice too. True story.

In the evening, I had my mixed berry-pineapple-apple shake with a kick of ginger. Bombastic.

Overall: I will say the biggest change I’m experiencing on day 1 and 2 is thirst. I am craving and drinking water all the time. My hunger levels are same as usual, hungry in the morning, hungry in the afternoon, hungry in the evening.  I do not feel starved. I do not feel tired. And I have this grandiose desire to make antioxidant abundant lunches every day, which is the best takeaway this cleanse can give me!

Clean Cleanse Day 1: Shakes, Naughty Dogs, & Roses

Goddess Huntress | Clean Cleanse Vanilla Shake Packet

April 21, 2014: First day of Dr. Alejandro Junger’s Clean Cleanse

Three days prior to starting the cleanse, The Clean Program advises to eat three meals a day from the Cleanse Diet, a list of approved foods such as salmon, turkey, herbs, quinoa, leafy greens, etc. To be honest, I was not a good pre-cleanse student with Easter weekend. Let’s just say I am guilty of wine and gluten…I know I’ll get served royally for this rebellion.

Thrilled to begin a wholesome three week cleansing, I started off my morning with a blueberry, avocado, vanilla shake.  I throw in frozen blueberries, 1/2 avocado, a scoop of my Green Vibrance superfood green powder, and a vanilla Clean Cleanse shake packet into the blender with a dash of stevia.

Goddess Huntress | Blueberry Clean Cleanse ShakeGoddess Huntress | Clean Cleanse Blueberry Shake

The shake was very filling.  It was a bit bland yet sweet, in need of a bit of zing. Noted: tonight’s shake needs a more tangy kick.

After, I set out my frozen salmon to defrost for lunch, then worked out with my trainer.  No difference in workout energy today, I felt strong on my first day of the cleanse.  Mind you, my workouts have been extremely modified since I strained my tendon in my foot, so it is mainly seated weight training, no cardio.  (I cannot wait to exercise normally again)

My mom met me after for a stroll around my neighborhood to admire the roses.  I don’t know what is in the magic soil here, because the roses are so gutsy, humungous, and tall!  I’ll include photos of them in the coming days as I do some cleanse mini-walks.

We get home to find that my dogs went to town on my defrosting, raw salmon and the other half of my avocado.  Well there goes that lunch plan…

Yes, those are the bandits above guilty of wanting to cleanse with me…

Veggie Grill to the rescue for lunch…thank goodness! I had steamed kale with roasted vegetables, quinoa, and miso gravy. Such a godsend when I don’t want to eat lunch at home or am, how else do I put it, LAZY.

Snacked on an apple around 5pm, then at 6, I unleashed the tangy madness for my dinner shake. Pineapple, green apple, and raspberries did the trick. Hell yeah, shake gods.

Osmia Organics Natural Perfume + Giveaway

Goddess Huntress | Osmia Organics PerfumeCampfire dreaming and leather. Two of my favorite scents.

Osmia Organics has taken these scents to another level.  Osmia Organics Natural Perfume in Juniper Fire smells fresh of the mountains: juniper, cedar, sandalwood, and a touch of smoke. These notes may sound heavy, but they are really light and absolutely delicate. Juniper Fire is such a beautiful blend of notes, it can be worn year round.

I also love Osmia Organics Natural Perfume in Cuoro, which is a deeper woodsy scent with the essence of leather.  There is a gorgeous masculine essence to this perfume that I love. I at times dab a little Cuoro with a little dab of Juniper Fire, which lends a soft dimension to all the notes.

Seriously high-end fragrances, that can be worn by a man or a woman.

Whenever I am introduced to natural fragrances that smell as good or better than their toxic luxury fragrance counterparts, I fall madly, madly in love.  Osmia Organics has my heart.

Not only does Osmia Organics have a dreamy, chic selection of fragrances, they also have a full range of skincare, couture soaps, bath, lip care, and some of the most beautiful photos in Instagram! Dreamy.

Osmia Organics and I would like you to get dreamy as well! Osmia Organics is giving one lucky Goddess Huntress reader a choice of 5 perfume samples and your choice of one of three lip glosses!

BREAKING: Mercury Poisoning From Face Cream

MERCURY1

This week, the Orange County Health Care Agency in California put out a press release on a mercury poisoning case from face cream.

The face cream, which appears to be homemade or imported from Mexico, registered an exorbitant amount of  mercury.

The air samples of the cream were 50,000 times more than the safe limit.  I repeat 50,000 times.

Mercury Poisoning Linked to Use of Face Cream

Envenenamiento por mercurio relacionado con el uso de cremas faciales
The Orange County Health Care Agency warns against the use of face creams that appear to be homemade or imported from Mexico due to potentially high levels of mercury. One case of mercury poisoning associated with use of these products has recently been identified in Orange County, and several others are under investigation. The face cream claims to lighten skin, fade freckles and age spots, and treat wrinkles and acne. Air samples taken from the cream had more than 50,000 times the safe limit. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not allow mercury in drugs or cosmetics, expect under very specific conditions which these products do not meet.“Anyone using homemade face creams should stop using it immediately,” said Dr. Eric Handler, Orange County Public Health Officer. “If you have used these products and have symptoms of mercury poisoning see a physician immediately and get tested for mercury poisoning.”The signs and symptoms of mercury poisoning may include muscle pain and cramps, nervousness and irritability, difficulty with concentration, headache, tremors, memory loss, depression, insomnia, weight loss, and fatigue. Other symptoms may include numbness or tingling in hands, feet, or around the lips.Creams that contain mercury can be dangerous for anyone living in the home where they are used. The mercury spreads from the hands of anyone using the cream to other things they touch. Mercury then gets into the air and anyone in the home can breathe it in. Unborn babies, infants, and children are especially sensitive to the effects of mercury.  It can damage the kidneys and the nervous system, and interfere with the development of the brain in unborn children and very young children.Any face cream product that is suspected to contain mercury must be disposed of as a household hazardous waste; people are urged to call Orange County Environmental Health at (714) 433-6000 for proper disposal of the product. The Health Care Agency is working with the California Department of Public Health, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to investigate the cases and availability in the community.Examples of products

How to Protect Yourself

  • Check the label of any skin lightening, anti-aging, acne or other skin product you use. If you see the words “mercurous chloride,” “calomel,” “mercuric,” “mercurio,” or “mercury,” stop using the product immediately.
  • If there is no label or no ingredients are listed, do not use the product. Federal law requires that ingredients be listed on the label of any cosmetic or drug.
  • Don’t use products labeled in languages other than English unless English labeling is also provided.
  • If you suspect you have been using a product with mercury, stop using it immediately. Thoroughly wash your hands and any other parts of your body that have come in contact with the product. Contact your health care professional or a medical care clinic for advice.
  • If you have questions, call your health care professional or the Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222; it is open 24 hours a day.
  • Do not throw the product in the trash; contact Orange County Environmental Health at (714) 433-6000 for proper disposal of the product.

To learn more about the health effects of mercury, visit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

If these images of the creams look at all familiar to you, please notify the Health Agency as soon as possible.  It is key to determine the source of these products and your help is needed.

Secondly, we must wish this woman and the potential unknown others that purchased these creams, the best health outcome possible along with those around them.

Thirdly, homemade beauty products sold at farmer’s markets, festivals, flea markets, Etsy, neighbors, solicitors, etc. more than likely did not go through FDA’s strict review/approval to sell or manufacture in the industry, so you must stay the hell away because you’ll never know what you are getting and neither do the creators of the products.  Homemade proprietors may not know that their ingredients are contaminated or what the ingredient capacities are.

Protection, awareness, and regulated products are key.

Cucumber Kimchi

CUCUMBERKIMCHI

Hawaii is a very unique place where there is an eclectic blend of Pacific Islander, Asian, Native Hawaiian, American, and Portuguese…which means a very diverse and interesting food culture.

One of my biggest food loves while visiting Hawaii was kimchi.  I’ve always loved kimchi and haven’t had it in my diet in a couple years.  While in Hawaii, we went hiking with a friend and after we pull into the gas station to fill up and grab some water…our friend Kai then comes out with a to-go portion of kimchi for our ride back.  Kimchi at the gas station!?! My mind was blown!  I then visited my newly anointed favorite Hawaiian market Foodland and raided their kimchi section.  I walked out with a couple tubs, one being cucumber kimchi.

We got back to the house. Andrew made me a passion fruit cocktail and I sat on our friend’s ocean front patio with cucumber kimchi in tow.  I had to hold myself back from devouring the whole tub, so I wouldn’t seem rude to Andrew, he did make me a delicious cocktail after all!

That night I was determined to make cucumber kimchi back on the mainland.

So I did.

Kimchi as a fermented food.  The fermentation process is like pickling.  As it ferments in the jar, beneficial bacteria starts to form.  Consuming beneficial bacteria is a great way to bring balance to your digestive system.  Friendly bacteria is very susceptible to deplete from antibiotics, food treated with antibiotics, and tap water, which has been detected to carry trace amounts of antibiotics.  Keeping friendly bacteria in balance improves skin health and improves skin’s defenses from free radicals. And then…there are the beauty benefits of cucumbers.

So here is my recipe, my first go at kimchi.  Just to be clear, this is a fusion of many of the recipes I read.   Feel free to add or delete per your taste and share your recipes in the comments below!

GH Beauty Bites Cucumber Kimchi

5 cucumbers chopped or sliced however you prefer

2 sprigs of green onion chopped

1/2 tsp of minced ginger

1 clove of garlic minced

1 tsp crushed pepper

1 tsp of kosher salt

1 tsp of honey

1 tsp of apple cider vinegar

2-3 sterilized canning jars

Put cut cucumber in large bowl and add kosher salt. Thoroughly mix.  Let cucumber sit in bowl with salt on the counter for four hours.  You will notice water being extracted from the cucumbers and collecting in the bowl as time passes.

Add remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly. Spoon cucumber mixture into sterilized jars, including liquid.  Pack into jar, leaving a couple inches free at the top to prevent spillage during fermentation.  Close lid tightly and leave on counter for 24 hours to ferment, mixture may bubble during this time.  After 24 hours, it is ready to eat. Store in refrigerator. Keeps for a couple weeks.

Delicious snack and is unbelievable warm with rice or quinoa!
